Animoto Trailers

This week, we started our new topics. We have started to learn about Electricity, the Anglo Saxons and Epic Citadel- a brilliant game that will be inspiring our writing this half term.

Today, we used a fantastic app called 'Animoto' to make these wonderful persuasive trailers for Epic Citadel. It will take lots of posts for me to share them all- the blog can only do two at a time!

TARDIS Lands at School!

Friday was a very bizarre day at our school! Not only were the children wearing their own clothes, but also we had a visit from the Doctor!

At 11:15, a TARDIS landed in the small playground, just outside St. George's Class. We rushed outside to investigate.

As journalists, we knew that we would need some eye-witness statements. We politely interviewed some children from Years 3 and 4, Mrs Meaden, Miss Boyle, Mr Croft and even Mrs Day! They told us what they had seen, heard or smelled as the TARDIS arrived. Mr Croft had noticed a strong smell of fish fingers and custard!

Following our interviews, when we were hard at work on our newspaper articles, something even more fantastic occurred! We had a visit from the Doctor himself! We were lucky enough to hold a press conference with him. We found out that he had rushed to our school because he had received a distress call from the School Office. He was worried that we had been invaded by aliens!

The Doctor and the Dalek Coding

This half term we have been learning to code... and saving the universe! We have been developing our programming skills, by playing a fantastic game called 'The Doctor and The Dalek' from the BBC.

We have been learning that coding is how we tell computers what we want them to do. We have learned to put together sequences of commands, use repetition and 'if' or 'when' commands. There have been some very tricky challenges, which have taken a lot of patience and concentration, but we are becoming great programmers!

Isle of Tune!

Today we played a fantastic new game. We experimented with programming to create our own island and to make music- at the same time!

Isle of Tune is a great game, in which you create an island that makes tunes. First you create your road network. Then you add other objects to the streets. Each item you add to your island (houses, trees, bushes etc.) plays a musical note. You can then change the notes and sounds that each item makes.

Once you have created your road network, you can add up to 3 cars. As each car passes an object along the roadside, it plays the note you have programmed. We had lots of fun with this today!

Pyramids and Lego Stop Motion Animation!

This week we have been learning about the pyramids, particularly those in Giza. We used this excellent website to look around Giza and learn about some of its features.

We also watched some short BBC clips about the building of the pyramids. We learned how archeologists have been able to discover how the pyramids were built.

Can you remember why the Ancient Egyptians buried their dead on the West of the Nile?

Yesterday, we combined the animation skills we have been learning in Computing with our knowledge about Ancient Egypt to make these wonderful videos. We used an app called 'Stop Motion Studio' to produce these stop motion animations. Instead of stone, we used Lego to build our pyramids!

More Animation!

On Thursday, we continued learning about animation. This week we used a program called 'Voki' to create some speaking characters. We had to work in groups to decide how the character should look, what they might wear, where they should be and how they would speak. Then, we used 'text-to-speech' to make our characters talk. It was quite tricky, as some words had to be spelled one sound at a time (phonetically) so that the computer could pronounce them properly.

Puppet Pals Animation

On Thursday we started learning about animation. This half term we will be making some animations of our own, using different techniques. We will be creating some films about Ancient Egypt... watch this space!

This week we used an app called 'Puppet Pals' to experiment with animation- we recorded the movements of the characters, selected and changed backgrounds and added voices to tell the story.

The Blog is Back! Loom Bands...

Hello! I've been having some technical difficulties with the blog in the last couple of weeks, but (fingers crossed!) it seems to be back in action!

So, the year has ended and we have all said goodbye to each other and headed out into the summer holidays! Before we finished term, we had a very busy and exciting few weeks.

In the last couple of weeks we have been Loom Band crazy in St. George's Class! We followed some video instructions to try to make some complicated new designs, did some Loom Band maths (to practise our addition and learn about ratio) and had a debate about whether or not Loom Bands should be banned.

Last week, we had a visit from Dan Shepherd of FarShoreline Productions, who came and recorded our debate. Dan recorded lots of us speaking, then edited our discussion to make a short documentary. The final recording will be on the blog soon. Can you hear yourself speaking? Which side do you think won? Should Loom Bands be banned?!
