A Visit from Monsieur Davi

This half term we have been enjoying learning about Togo, so we were absolutely delighted when we were able to welcome a special Togolese visitor to our classroom. Monsieur Davi was a fantastic guest, who taught us lots about life in Togo and about the many languages spoken there. As a linguist and former teacher, he was able to share lots of knowledge about Africa with us.

Monsieur Davi also brought some Togolese foods to show us and even set us the challenge of designing some posters to advertise Togolese food such as cassava, cocoa beans, coffee beans, palm nuts, okra and corn.

He was very impressed by the children's knowledge and interest in Togo. Thank you for coming to visit us, Mr. Davi!

Delicious Cooking

This week, St. George's cooked some delicious banana and plantain, with Mrs Herrera, Mrs Cook and Miss Robertson. Everyone enjoyed cooking and tasting the scrumptious food- all of the children have been talking about plantain this week!

Pedal Power!

Today we had a wonderful time, making smoothies with Tim from Sustrans. He has visited us before to talk about the benefits of cycling, especially to and from school. Today, however, he brought a particularly exciting bike with him!

Tim asked each group to follow a recipe of 3 bananas, 4 strawberries, 2 spoonfuls of blueberries and some apple juice for the smoothie. We each took a turn to add the ingredients for our smoothies to a blender jug, which was then attached to the back of Tim's smoothie bike. Each child in the class then had a turn at pedalling on the special bike, to power the blender. We used pedal power to make our own smoothies and everyone agreed that they were delicious!

A Challenge From The BFG

On Wednesday, we received a very special delivery from Giant Country. The BFG had heard that we were going to donate our profits from Cafe Marvellous to the Roald Dahl Marvellous Children's Charity. He needed us to make brochures to persuade people to visit, so that we could make lots of money for their charity. He kindly sent us loads of brochures from other cafés and restaurants, so that we could learn what brochures need to include.

On Thursday, he sent us an email with a video message! It was our turn to make brochures and we had to persuade people to come to Cafe Marvellous.

Here are some excellent examples. Can you spot some rhetorical questions? Can you see some flattery? Any catchy phrases or alliteration? Did they include the important information a customer would need to know? Are they colourful and eye catching?
Have they used any other tactics?

Cafe Marvellous

We have had a very busy week in St. George's Class! It is now less than two weeks until the opening of our cafe. This week we made some important decisions about the cafe. We chose a charity to donate our profits to, developed some items for the menu and chose a name for the cafe.

We are very proud to say that we will be supporting the Roald Dahl Marvellous Children's Charity (click the picture below to learn about them). We all researched some charities and then together we made the final decision.

Following this decision, we started thinking about some ideas for cafe names. There were lots do fantastic suggestions, but the name that was chosen by the vote was...

Cafe Marvellous

The cafe will be open for our families and invited guests to visit on:

Wednesday 22nd October 2:30 - 4:00pm
Thursday 23rd October 2:30 - 3:30pm

On Wednesday, we started or experiment with some cooking. We worked in groups to make 5 of the international dishes that we suggested on our mind maps last week.

We made:

Italian Vegetable Pizza

Vegetable Sushi

Russian Vegetable Soup

Chinese Stir Fry

French Fruit Tart

We are looking forward to adding lots more dishes to our menu!

Cafe Ideas

We are very excited about our upcoming cafe project! Last week we started to think of some menu ideas, using what we have learned about Brick Lane, Brixton market and our local 'Bread of Life' cafe.

Here are some of our ideas; does anything catch your eye? What would you like to eat at our international cafe?

Safety in the Kitchen

Source: sellingrenoandsparks

As we get closer to the opening of our cafe, we have been learning the important skills do being healthy and safe in the kitchen.

We played this great game to learn how to keep our kitchen safe. Click the picture to play:

Then, we drew a perfect kitchen and labelled how it has been kept safe. Here are some excellent examples:

Then, we thought about how we can get ourselves ready to cook. We drew and labelled ourselves as chefs ready to cook. Here is a fantastic chef-in-the-making!

Bread of Life Cafe

Today we had a fantastic trip to the Bread of Life Cafe on Barry Road. We had a great time interviewing Mary and Michelle about running a cafe. They answered lots of questions for us and we learned some very useful and interesting information. They taught us about choosing a menu, health and safety, special offers, advertising and fair trade.

We were very lucky to be given a tour of the cafe, including the kitchen and the Fair Trade Centre.

What was the most interesting thing you learned?

Amazing Art- Still Life

Today we continued with our fruit-themed week- take a look at these fantastic drawings! We drew the fruit still life, focusing on using a range of shades and looking carefully at how the shapes of the fruits overlapped each other.

Here are some beautiful examples:

Following our drawings, we had our first experiment with watercolour paints. Each table had a different selection of fruit from around the world, with different textures and colours.

We practised mixing the colours to get the shades we wanted and blended the paints on our artwork.
