Inventors' Workshop

Yesterday, we reached the grand finale of our Inventors topic. We had spent the week designing and writing about our inventions and it was finally time to make the prototypes.

This week, St. Clare's Class has become an inventors' workshop! We found out about the inventing process, then mind-mapped some problems that we could solve before designing our own inventions. Everyone created a detailed diagram of their invention and annotated it with  information and materials. Next, we each wrote a 'patent application' for our designs.

This week for your homework, you need to research a famous inventor. You can present your research however you wish- you could write a report, make a Powerpoint presentation, make a video or song, create a poster or model... Use your imagination!

Remember, you msut avoid plagiarism! You cannot copy (or copy and paste) information exactly as you find it in a book or on the internet. You MUST write your research into your own words, just like we do with Genius Time. We will always be able to spot copied information!

A Very Strange Delivery...

On Friday, we received a special audio message from an inventor called Professor Templeton. He told us that he had sent us an important invention of his for us to test, but that we must keep it safe, as it was under threat from a saboteur.

The parcel arrived, airmail from the U.S.A. just before play. It was in a very heavy sealed box and was labelled 'FRAGILE'.

We wrote emails to the professor, to reassure him that his invention was in safe hands and ask him some questions to gather more information about the delivery and the mysterious saboteur.

However... on our return to class after play, we found that the box had been destroyed and the invention was gone! We came up with many theories about what might have happened and how a saboteur could possibly have got to the invention.

Next week, we hope to find out more and hear more from Professor Templeton. We don't think he's going to be very pleased to hear about the disappearance of his precious invention!

Ingenious Inventions!

This week, St. Clare's classroom has become an inventors' workshop! We each thought of an invention that would solve a real-life problem, then drew it and annotated our diagrams in detail. We then wrote some excellent explanations about our inventions and how they work. Today, we made our prototypes! We decided that we did not need to use the real materials for our inventions, or make them full-size, but instead made smaller models to demonstrate how they would look and how they would work.

Last week, we learned all about George Washington Carver and Doctor James West. We decided that they were fantastic scientists and role models and that therefore they should be represented in London's Science Museum. We wrote some persuasive letters to the Science Museum to convince them to put on an exhibition about either George Washington Carver or Doctor James West.
