A Fabulous First Week!

What a wonderful first week we had! It was fantastic to get together as the new St. Clare's Class and settle into our classroom together.

We've completed some beautiful artwork this week, to make our mark on our new classroom. We each designed a stunning circle design, before chopping them up to make this beautiful collaborative mural:

Every child in St. Clare's put their best foot forward into the new year by designing a creative trainer. Which is your favourite?

On Wednesday, we received a very strange notice about Hula Hoops! The children in St. Clare's all had to come up with a theory, or story, about why this might be and what could have happened for Hula Hoops to be banned. There were some fabulous pieces of writing (click on the pictures to make them larger and easier to read):

On Thursday, we needed to work together in teams on a special rescue mission! Poor Fred the worm had been out sailing when a storm struck and he was trapped on top of his boat, with his life ring underneath! The teams had to work together to rescue him- but they could not touch him, the boat, or the ring with their hands (or any part of their bodies). They could only use the paper clips and couldn't let poor Fred touch the water- or puncture him or his life ring. It wasn't as easy as you would think- it took some serious thinking, planning and teamwork!

On Friday, we enjoyed a fantastic afternoon with Bassistry- singing and dancing along with the rest of the school. What a wonderful way to end a lovely first week!

Welcome to St. Clare's!

Welcome to St. Clare's Class 2016-17!

We are all so pleased to have you with us. Here's some important information:

On Monday and Tuesday, Mrs Hopkins will teach St. Clare's, with Mrs Cook.

On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Mrs Parrott will teach St. Clare's with Mrs Cook or Mrs Brand.

You will go swimming on Monday morning, leaving school at 10:30am. We will need parents or carers to help us every week, otherwise we won't be able to go. Please do sign up on our list which will be outside the classroom door at the bottom of the stairs, or find Mrs Cook in the playground when she has her swimming clipboard!

P.E. will be every Thursday afternoon. Please bring your P.E. kit in on a Monday and leave it in school all week, in case we need it for any unexpected fun events! You can then take it home on a Friday to be washed and ready for the following week.

Homework is likely to be going out on a Friday, to be returned on Tuesday or Wednesday, but we will let you know the precise details as soon as they are confirmed.

An Exciting Year Ahead!

I hope you are all enjoying your last week of the summer holidays! I'm looking forward to seeing you all next week and hearing about what you have been up to. We have a fantastic year ahead of us!

As we get closer to the start of the new school year, it is time to start thinking about getting ready. You might have already bought new school shoes or perhaps had a haircut, but it's also time to think about what else you can do to be ready.


Have a think about these questions:

What are you looking forward to this year?

Is there anything you are worried about? What could you do to feel less worried?

What do you hope to achieve this year? How will you achieve it?

What might you need to improve on this year? Have you got a target you would like to meet? Perhaps learning all of your times tables, reading more books, joining a new club or learning to swim a length of the pool?

These are all great things to think about before coming back to school next week. Perhaps you could talk about these questions with an adult or older brother or sister. Could they help you to achieve your goals this year?

A Busy First Week!

Last week, we settled into our new classroom and new routines. We enjoyed our Minecraft Maths (Mathscraft!)

We also had great fun with a team building challenge called 'Tiny Glass Towers'. Here we are working hard to make the tallest possible tower with the tiny glasses. It was much harder than we expected- they were very wobbly indeed!

We have had a wonderful first week in St. Clare's Class! We are settling into our new room in Upper School and have enjoyed welcoming Finn back to St. Anthony's.

It has been a busy week; we tried the tiny glass tower challenge, wrote about where our 'Mystery Ticket' might take us, created beautiful imagination portraits, danced and sung with Bassistry, completed lots of Minecraft maths challenges, written letters to our future selves and started our CD weaving projects.... WOW! There will be lots of photos of these activities on the blog next week.

 We have another exciting week ahead next week, as we start our Inventors and Inventions topic!

Remember that you will need to bring in your swimming kit and P.E. kit on Monday.

Homework:
Homework will begin next week. Make sure you are reading for 20 minutes each day- we have lots of new books in our book corner, you are welcome to borrow as many as you like!

Reading Response: Reading activities are handed out on a Monday and are due in on Wednesday. You will complete the activity in your Reading Response book.

Maths: Maths homework will be handed out every Wednesday and is due in on Friday. This will be on paper and will go into your Homework Folder, which we will keep in school.

Topic, Spellings and Grammar: These are handed out on Friday and are due in on Tuesday. They will be on paper and will also go into your Homework Folder at school. Spellings will be tested on Tuesdays.

Saving Fred

One beautiful summer afternoon, Fred was out on the lake in his boat, enjoying the sunshine. Suddenly, the sky darkened as a huge storm struck; the winds whipped around him and the rain poured. The torrential rain and frightening winds surrounded poor Fred and soon his boat was turned over. Poor Fred, a worm, cannot swim. As the storm blew past and the air settled, Fred was stranded on top of his boat and his lifesaving rubber ring was trapped underneath his boat.

On Thursday, the children in St. George's Class had to work in teams to save poor Fred, the worm! They had to get Fred into his life ring to save him from drowning.

There were a few things that made their mission more complicated:

• Fred can't swim, so he couldn't fall into the water (touch the table).
• The children could only use paper clips to touch Fred, the boat or the life ring.
• They could not injure Fred in any way.

 
It was a difficult challenge, but eventually all of the teams worked together to save Fred. Here's how they got on:

Once they had completed their mission, each group had to work together to explain how they saved Fred. They had to give a step-by-step explanation of what they did and use diagrams to show clearly how he was saved:

A Busy First Week!

We have had a very busy first week in St. George’s Class. We have played some team building games, shown off our writing and maths skills and made some beautiful artwork.

It was important to start our year together by deciding how we would like our classroom to work. We had some discussions about what makes a successful classroom and we all added our ideas to these post-it note posters. Click on the pictures to make them larger and easier to read.

We used these ideas to help us write our class rules. We discussed what we want our classroom to look and feel like and these were the rules we chose:

• Always be kind.
• Try your best.
• Listen to everyone.
• Be happy!
• Keep our classroom clean and tidy, so that it is safe.
• Respect everyone and remember your manners.
• Stay seated during lessons and put your hand up if you wish to speak.
• Respect the school and children's property.

This week we also discussed what we each hoped to achieve this year. We chose some targets for ourselves, then made these beautiful hands to ‘Reach for the Stars’ in our class!

 

 

Mrs Parrott loves Art, so we started the year with some shared artwork, to show that we can make wonderful things when we work together. Take a look at our fantastic circle mural:

Welcome to St. George's Class!

Welcome to St. George's Class! It was wonderful to see you all after the long summer holiday and welcome you to your new class. We were delighted to meet Ace and Daniella who have joined St. Anthony's this week- we're so pleased to have you in our class!

In St. George's Class you will be taught by Mr. Croft on Monday and Tuesday, then by me (Mrs Parrott) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We are lucky to have Mrs Cook in class with us every day.

On Monday you will need to bring in your swimming kit. You will be having PE on Thursdays, but it is useful to bring your PE kit in on a Monday and take it home on a Friday to be washed, just in case we have an extra PE session during the week.
