Medusa Masks

Today we worked with Mrs Cook to read the story of Medusa, then make these terrifying masks! Don't look directly into our eyes... we might turn you into stone!

A Taste of Ancient Greece!

We have started our new topic! We have enjoyed reading the beginning of the myth of Icarus and Daedalus.

Today we went back in time to a banquet at the palace of King Minos! We tasted some Ancient Greek food and some interesting combinations of flavours:

Bread dipped in honey

Bread dipped in wine (grape juice for us!)

Olives

Dates

After our tasting session, we each wrote a menu fit for a King's banquet:

Angry Birds 3D- Part 2

Here are a few more photos of our Angry Birds in action! It took good teamwork skills and some careful aerodynamic designs, but we managed to make our birds fly... and cause destruction!

Did you enjoy this challenge?

Paul Newham Science Challenge!

We were very lucky to have a visit from Paul Newham, just before we broke up for half term. It was an excellent morning of experimenting with circuits. All of our knowledge about electricity and circuits was put to the test with a series of exciting challenges.

Paul told us that he is an inventor- he creates toys, but he could not make his toys without understanding how circuits work. We showed off all of the hard work we have been doing to learn about circuits with Mr. Croft and Mr. Peel. Paul was impressed that we could draw the correct symbols to draw a circuit like a scientist.

Here are two of Paul's toy designs:

Firstly, we had to create a working circuit with just these three items. Can you remember how it worked?

As the session went on, we added more and more items to our circuits. We even made fans spin and buzzers buzz!

These were all series circuits. At the end of the lesson, Paul introduced us to a different type of circuit, which behaved differently. In this type of circuit, if one bulb or buzzer was removed, the others continued to work.

Can you remember what this type of circuit was called?

There will be a CLASS DOJO POINT for anyone who can leave a comment with the name of this type of circuit SPELLED CORRECTLY!!

Angry Birds 3D!

We have had a very exciting week! Yesterday we split into teams and each team designed and made two Angry Birds. We learnt about air resistance and the shapes that would fly furthest and fastest. We used our new knowledge to help us design and build aerodynamic birds! We had to prepare to compete in two challenges today- firstly distance and then destruction. We had to design one bird that would fly a long way and another bird that would cause maximum destruction in our 3D real-life Angry Bird level!

Here are the finished Angry Birds. Can you tell which are designed to fly a long distance and which are for destruction?

There will be some more pictures and perhaps even a video of the challenges on the blog very soon!

Tomorrow we will be interpreting the results, using our data handling skills. Well done teams!

Ancient Greek Shields

This week, for your homework, you have been asked to design a shield for an Ancient Greek hoplite soldier.

Here are some examples of shields (based on what historians think they would have looked like, from evidence they have found and images on Ancient Greek pottery). You can copy parts of a design from the pictures, but we would be much more impressed if you could design one of your own, to suit an Athenian or Spartan soldier!

Sploder

Today in ICT we had lots of fun building our own computer games! We used a website called Sploder to make some platform games. We'll be continuing with this project next week. If you want to create some games at home, you can use the login that I showed you today. If you can't remember it, come and ask me tomorrow and you can write it in your Reading Record so you won't forget.

Here is an early example- next week there will be even more fantastic games to share!

CSI St. George

Yesterday, a terrible crime occurred at St. Anthony's School; right in the middle of our classroom! While we were out at play, one of the Angry Birds was MURDERED in our classroom!

Luckily, there were 24 of the country's finest detectives on hand to investigate the crimescene. We used magnifying glasses to look closely at all of the evidence, then interviewed a number of eye witnesses around the school. Fortunately, they were able to provide us with some very useful evidence, which helped with our examination of the case. We gathered our evidence and considered who our main suspects were.

We decided that the evidence pointed towards the pigs being responsible for the evil murder of Jay the blue bird. Each Police Detective then wrote a formal report about the crime and their evidence, suggesting what to do next and where we might find the key suspect.

Some examples of these reports will be up on the blog at the weekend, after the forensic investigations are completed.
