Doctor Who

This week we started our exciting new topic... Doctor Who!

We started off by meeting the three main characters we will be encountering; The Doctor, Amy and Rory.

We also watched a fantastic short script written by some children in a primary school in Basingstoke in 2011, which won a competition and was actually filmed! We took this as a challenge to make sure that by the end of this unit, we will be writing adventures for the Doctor that are just as good- or perhaps even better!

Our Rangoli Patterns

This week we worked in teams to create some beautiful Rangoli patterns to celebrate Diwali.

Silent Movies

Today we started our big silent movie project! We began learning about silent movies today and found out about two of the most famous stars of silent movies; Charlie Chaplin (who lived in Kennington- not far from us) and Buster Keaton.

We discovered that many silent movies had the same features. They were all silent, apart from music (usually a piano), they were in black and white, used exaggerated gestures and expressions, had cue cards and often involved policemen, chase scenes and slapstick comedy.

We saw some very funny silent movie clips today! We also found out that the director would often talk to the actors while they were shooting the film, because they were not recording sound, so he could give them advice about exactly how he wanted them to look.

Next week we will be getting into teams and thinking about storylines for our own films!

Diwali

On Sunday, many Hindu and Sikh families celebrated Diwali- this festival lasts for five days. Diwali is the festival of lights, which celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Today we heard the story of Rama and Sita and found out about some of the traditions of Diwali.

One of the special traditions is the drawing or painting of Rangoli patterns. Rangoli patterns are created on the floor of homes and other buildings to welcome in visitors.  They are also thought to welcome the Goddess of Wealth. They are usually brightly coloured, with repeated shapes, often in flower or petal designs. Sometimes the patterns are made with coloured rice, grains or petals.

 

 

 

Today we started to design some Rangoli patterns in groups- I will add the pictures when we're finished!

Firework Safety

I am repeating this very important post about firework safety because tonight is Bonfire Night.
I hope you all have a wonderful time watching fireworks, but follow these rules to make sure you stay safe.

A New Headteacher's Challenge!

Mr. Owens has set you a new challenge!

This should be a very easy question for the children in St. George's Class!

There are two parts to the question, so read it carefully:

 Headteacher's Challenge  
The 'Girl Who Spun Gold' is an 'African - American' retelling of a European story. 
1. What is the name of that European story? 
2. Who first 'collected' the story in a book of folk tales?

Answers with name, class and in your best presentation to the Headteacher Challenge box by Tuesday 5th November.

Make sure you write your answer very neatly and post it in the Headteacher Challenge box tomorrow!

Fireworks

This weekend is Diwali and there will also be lots of celebrations for Bonfire Night, which is next week, so lots of you will see some fireworks over the weekend.  Remember that fireworks are exciting and beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. Personification Poems

This week, we wrote some more fabulous poetry. We picked an object from our book 'Hurricane' and imagined that we were interviewing that item. We asked a set of questions and the answers gave our readers clues about which object we were describing. This was our first try at personification (giving an object human qualities).

Here is the poem we wrote as a class:

What Am I?

 

What can you see?

I can see children looking at me.

 

What do you want?

I want someone to write on me.

 

What are you afraid of?

Cleaning spray!

 

What makes you angry?

People using lots of blu-tack.

 

What makes you happy?

Someone tickling me with a rubber.

 

What do you think is next for you?

I think the teacher will rub out the writing on me.

 

What can you remember?

My Mum and Dad were blackboards.

 

What advice do you have for us?

Copy me carefully!
