Super Speedy Year 5!

Yesterday, you had a wonderful morning at Dulwich College for St. Anthony's Sports Day! Unfortunately the weather didn't behave itself in the afternoon, so we finished off the events today. This morning we did the sprint events, to find out who the fastest girl and fastest boy in Year 5 are.

Our Visit to the Embassy!

On Thursday, we had the honour of visiting the Embassy of Japan in London's Piccadilly.

We had a wonderful afternoon learning about Japan and meeting some of the members of staff from the Embassy.

Firstly, we looked at the manga exhibition on display at the Embassy, as we will be beginning our own manga projects soon.

Then we were taken through to the spectacular ballroom, where we met Miss Soni. Miss Soni taught us lots of interesting facts about Japan.

After the presentation, we split into two groups. Each group took part in two activities: Japanese calligraphy and Yosakoi dance.

The calligraphy class was fascinating and we had to follow very strict rules. It was important to sit with the correct posture and hold the brush in the correct way. We learned a number of Japanese characters, including those for river, mountain and life.

Our teacher from the Embassy was very impressed by our efforts and said that we were the best behaved class they had had at the Embassy- well done, everyone!

The Yosakoi dance workshop was led by Miss Soni, who had performed in the Japanese national Yosakoi finals with her team in Japan.

We each wore a special 'happi' coat and held two 'naruko' (wooden clappers).

It was great fun to learn all of the moves and poses! It certainly helped us to learn our Japanese numbers, too!

Cross Country Super Stars!

We had an incredibly successful Cross Country competition today! Every member of our class completed the race (which was approximately 1.3 miles long) and finished with a smile on their face!

A huge congratulations must go to 6 of our St. Clare's children, who won medals! We were very proud to win the gold, silver and bronze medals in the boys' and girls' competitions in Year 5, plus coming first, second and third in the Year 6 girls' race and second and third in the Year 6 boys. Well done!

Cross Country Tomorrow!

Tomorrow we will be attending a Cross Country competition on Peckham Rye. Make sure you remember your PE kit, trainers, a bottle of water and a rain jacket if the weather looks like it might be wet.

If your parent or carer would like to come with us, please let Mrs Parrott or Mrs Cook or  know asap!
We will be leaving school at 9:30am and returning before lunchtime.

One World Week- Togo!

This week is ONE WORLD WEEK at school. Each class is learning about a different country and the children will be visiting each classroom to learn about the country they are studying and get a stamp in their special passport. We will be taking lots of photos to share on the blog.

In St. George's Class we are learning about Togo. We will be finding out all about Togo for the next month. So far, we have used ICT to research and complete a fact file about Togo, found Africa and Togo (and many of its neighbouring countries) on a map, we have been reading and writing about 'Akimbo and the Elephants' and we have started some artwork in the style of Togolese artist, Joseph Amedopko.

This week is a very busy week- today you walked for Africa in our annual fundraising event, tomorrow we will be participating in the annual One World Week Football World Cup, on Thursday we will be visiting all of the classes in the school to learn about their countries and get our passports stamped and enjoying International Evening from 3:45-5:00pm and on Friday we will enjoy St. Patrick's special One World Week assembly. A very exciting week ahead!

Amazing Athletes!

St. George's Class are fantastic athletes! We came third in the athletics competition today- against 7 schools from across Southwark. Everyone ran, jumped and threw wonderfully and we won lots of events! Everyone was well-behaved and we saw some excellent sportsmanship. Very well done everybody. Welcome back to a new school year!

We've had a very busy day today- I hope you all enjoyed yourselves! It was wonderful to meet the new St. George's Class and get to know each other. Today we were lucky to meet our new classmate Roderick and our new Teaching Assistant Miss Jordis.

Our teachers are:

Mr. Croft on Monday and Tuesday.

Miss Benn on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Mrs Cook is our teaching assistant and she is here every day.

Miss Jordis is our teaching assistant and she is here every day.

 

The important information you need to remember each week is:

Swimming is on Monday morning- remember to bring in your towel, a swimming hat (available to buy from the school office or bring your own), a dark-coloured one piece swimming costume for girls, or trunks for boys. You may bring goggles if you want to and you need to bring a healthy snack, such as a piece of fruit, for after swimming.

P.E. is on Wednesday. It is best to bring your P.E. kit in on a Monday and take it home to be washed on a Friday.

Homework is handed out on Thursday and needs to be handed in by the following Tuesday.

Spellings and times tables will be tested on Thursdays.

Cricket Tournament TOMORROW!

Tomorrow we will be playing cricket all day in our end of year tournament!
