Remembrance

On Friday, we remembered all those who had died or been affected by war. This year, the Royal British Legion wanted us to remember not only those who died in World Wars One and Two, but also those affected by wars since then and even today.

We had a special service at 10:45am, ending with a two minute silence and reflection at 11:00am. Can you remember why we hold our silence at exactly 11:00?

In the week before the service, we made poppy artwork and a wreath to offer in memory of the victims of war. Children from every class offered their wreath during the service. It was very special, moving and sombre.

Titanic Memorial Garden

Mrs Cook discovered the Titanic memorial garden in Greenwich Park over half term. Take a look at the photos below to see how the Titanic disaster has been remembered by the Maritime Museum in London. What a beautiful garden and a lovely way to remember those who died.

Good Friday

Today is Good Friday.

Today we remember the day that Jesus was crucified. It is a sad and serious day when we do not have special treats; some families might fast or avoid meat and the church will have no flowers and the statues might be covered. Today we observe the Stations of the Cross and we will hear the story of the Passion.

November in St. George's Class

November is an important month. Every year we remember and reflect upon the impact that wars have had on people around the world. On 11th November every year, we stop what we are doing and remember those who lost their lives in war. This year is particularly significant and important because we are remembering that it has been 100 years since the beginning of World War One.

Last week, every child in the school made a poppy which was displayed in the hall. All the poppies together look very powerful and are a reminder of the importance of November this year. We were inspired by the poppies installed at the Tower of London.

On Tuesday, there was a special service in school for Remembrance Day. We also had a competition to design a poster to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War One. Here are our entries:

In November, we also celebrate Bonfire Night. We learned all about the story of Guy Fawkes in two special assemblies (well done, St. Peter's Class!) and for homework we made some beautiful firework art. Here are some spectacular pieces of firework art:

World War One

Today we were very lucky to have a visit from Mr. Owens. He told us all about 'The Great War', as part of our Remembrance topic. It was very interesting and we all learned lots about the war and about how it is remembered.

A Fantastic Trip!

Today we had a wonderful day at Dulwich Picture Gallery. This morning we looked around the gallery and saw how people and events are remembered through art.

In the afternoon, we had a very exciting art workshop. We used acrylic paints to do some marbling, then learnt how to use origami to create beautiful remembrance poppies.
