Our Anglo Saxon Village

To end our Anglo Saxons topic, we created our own Anglo Saxon model village! We learned about how invaders might pick their site to build their village. Can you remember what they would have looked for when finding the perfect place to settle?

We explored an interactive Anglo Saxon village, to look closely at the shelters that they might have lived in. We learned that the houses would be built from wood, with straw, mud and dung to create the walls. This method was called wattle-and-daub. The roof would have been thatched:

We worked in groups to design and build our own Anglo Saxon home:

Once the shelters were constructed, we put them together to make the village. We made some smaller shelters and added a water source. As we know that Anglo Saxons were keen farmers, we also added lots of animals to our village. We even added a wolf as we know that wolves were living wild in Britain at this time and that they were very highly respected by the Anglo Saxons.

When everything was in place, we invited St. Patrick's Class to come in and visit. We shared what we knew about the Anglo Saxons and they told us lots of things that they knew. 

Finally, we had a play with our village and its inhabitants!
