Cafe Marvellous!

CONGRATULATIONS St. George's Class! You were wonderful today- the cafe was a real success and you all did your jobs brilliantly! Well done to our welcomers, servers, kitchen staff and money specialists! Tomorrow the cafe will be open for one more hour, from 2:30- 3:30pm.

I will update the blog with lots of pictures tomorrow and will reveal the grand total raised for Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity as soon as we have collected all of the money.

REMEMBER tomorrow is 'Wear It Pink' day! You do not need to wear your school uniform- whoo hoo! For a suggested donation of £1 for 'Breast Cancer Awareness' you can wear your own clothes from home, but you need to make sure that you wear something pink. You can wear pink clothing, or an accessory such as pink socks or a pink loom band bracelet. We will be collecting your donations in the pink box in our classroom, which we will then take to the special assembly tomorrow morning. I look forward to seeing you all looking marvellous in pink for the last day of Cafe Marvellous!

You can learn about the charity and  the work they do by watching this video:

Congratulations St. George's Class on a fantastic assembly! You all performed brilliantly yesterday and we were very proud of you! We had lots of lovely comments from children, visitors and the other teachers; they all thought it was an excellent assembly and they were very impressed by your acting talents. Well done!

Thank you to all of the parents and carers who came to support the children. We hope you enjoyed it!

Special congratulations to Bella and Justin M., who won the first Headteacher's Awards from Mrs Day. You were chosen for your excellent behaviour, hard work and great attitude at school.

Next up for St. George's Class, it's our cafe...

Diwali Homework- Rangoli Patterns!

Next week, many Hindu and Sikh families will be celebrating Diwali- this festival lasts for five days. Diwali is the festival of lights, which celebrates the triumph of good over evil. In St. George's Assembly we told the story of Rama and Sita and told our audience about some of the traditions of Diwali.

Click here to see the story again!

One of the special traditions is the drawing or painting of Rangoli patterns. Rangoli patterns are created on
the floor of homes and other buildings to welcome in visitors.  They are also thought to welcome the Goddess of Wealth. They are usually brightly coloured, with repeated shapes, often in flower or petal designs. Sometimes the patterns are made with coloured rice, grains or petals.

Here are some beautiful examples from around the world, that will help you with your homework. You will be designing your own Rangoli pattern  to celebrate Diwali.

I look forward to seeing your beautiful designs!

A Challenge From The BFG

On Wednesday, we received a very special delivery from Giant Country. The BFG had heard that we were going to donate our profits from Cafe Marvellous to the Roald Dahl Marvellous Children's Charity. He needed us to make brochures to persuade people to visit, so that we could make lots of money for their charity. He kindly sent us loads of brochures from other cafés and restaurants, so that we could learn what brochures need to include.

On Thursday, he sent us an email with a video message! It was our turn to make brochures and we had to persuade people to come to Cafe Marvellous.

Here are some excellent examples. Can you spot some rhetorical questions? Can you see some flattery? Any catchy phrases or alliteration? Did they include the important information a customer would need to know? Are they colourful and eye catching?
Have they used any other tactics?

Cafe Marvellous

We have had a very busy week in St. George's Class! It is now less than two weeks until the opening of our cafe. This week we made some important decisions about the cafe. We chose a charity to donate our profits to, developed some items for the menu and chose a name for the cafe.

We are very proud to say that we will be supporting the Roald Dahl Marvellous Children's Charity (click the picture below to learn about them). We all researched some charities and then together we made the final decision.

Following this decision, we started thinking about some ideas for cafe names. There were lots do fantastic suggestions, but the name that was chosen by the vote was...

Cafe Marvellous

The cafe will be open for our families and invited guests to visit on:

Wednesday 22nd October 2:30 - 4:00pm
Thursday 23rd October 2:30 - 3:30pm

On Wednesday, we started or experiment with some cooking. We worked in groups to make 5 of the international dishes that we suggested on our mind maps last week.

We made:

Italian Vegetable Pizza

Vegetable Sushi

Russian Vegetable Soup

Chinese Stir Fry

French Fruit Tart

We are looking forward to adding lots more dishes to our menu!
