A Fabulous Final Week!

Thank you, St. Clare's, for giving me such a wonderful last week before I leave for maternity leave! We worked hard this week and we were so happy to welcome the fantastic Mrs Bennett into our St. Clare's team. I know you're going to make her very welcome.

We've been continuing with our Kings and Knights topic this week. Mrs Bennett worked with you to create these spectacular crowns. We were so impressed by how different they all were!

You made some super fact files about Edward the Confessor. You'll be learning lots more about him and his interesting life in the next few weeks, including a fabulous trip to Westminster Abbey. It's one of my favourite trips in Year 5- you're going to love it! I can't wait to hear all about it.

We read Part III of 'The Lady of Shalott' this week, in which we met the dashing Sir Lancelot. We worked together to write this fantastic description of the knight:

On Wednesday, we showed Mrs Bennett how fantastic you are at poetry. Inspired by the moment that the Lady of Shalott looks out of the window and triggers her curse, we wrote this very dramatic poem. Can you spot some similes? Metaphors? Alliteration? Onomatopoeia? Can you find all the references to the poem we were inspired by, The Lady of Shalott?

The Curse

Dark clouds cloaked the sky like velvet,

Lightning tore through the coal,

She heard thunder crash upon the tower,

The air was filled with a deafening sound,

Rain lashed upon her trembling soul.

Crash! The mirror shattered into a million pieces,

Splinters flew like shooting stars,

A hurricane of glass and the web flew out of the casement.

A foreboding feeling enveloped her,

A scream of despair.

We also enjoyed our last P4C lesson together this week. Our stimulus was this beautiful short animation:

The questions we came up with were:
1. Can old things be as good as new? Why?
2. Should all people be treated the same? Why?
3. Can you still have happiness, even when you are unfortunate? Why?
4. How can we make life better?
5. What would the world be like if rubbish took over?

We voted to discuss question 3; Can you still have happiness, even when you are unfortunate? Why?
Our discussion included homelessness, the value of money, fairness, happiness and even communism! I shall miss our Philosophy discussions!

A Wonderful Easter Liturgy

Well done for your fantastic performance today. It was a truly special and moving recreation of the Easter Liturgy. The readers were clear and confident, the acting was sensitive and believable and the singing was incredibly beautiful. Well done! We are all very proud of you.

Tomorrow is the last day of term- we will have our CARE awards assembly! Remember to bring in a carrier bag and if you haven't yet spoken to your French penpal on Skype you need to be in at 8:30am tomorrow morning. You can all bring in a small toy tomorrow- nothing electronic, battery operated or valuable please! School will close at 2pm tomorrow!

A Wonderful Week!

We had a wonderful week; it was  Book Week and we had an unexpected visit from some unusual creatures!

In the next couple of weeks, we will be creating our own texts about endangered animals and working towards opening our Fairtrade Cafe at the end of term. Remember- we are in FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT!

An exciting addition to our topic has been the 'Snack Attack' challenge. Each team is working to design, promote and create a Fairtrade snack to compete with the other teams at school, to decide who will be our school's entry for the national competition. A busy few weeks ahead!

WORLD BOOK DAY- Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is WORLD BOOK DAY! Remember to come in costume (with a suggested donation of £1 for Book Aid International) and bring in your book for the Book Swap!

Every morning before school this week (from 8:30- 8:50am) we will be setting up the hall for you to come in and read with your dad (or brother, uncle, grandfather, or mum!) You can bring in your favourite book, or there will be some books and magazines available for you to read. There will be lots of comfy cushions and chairs for you to settle in and read together!

TOMORROW, you can come into school dressed as a character from a book. Everyone at school (including the adults!) will be in costume. It will be a fun day with a special assembly, so we can all see your fabulous costumes! We have suggested that you could donate £1 to a wonderful charity called 'Book Aid International'.

Remember to bring in a book from home that you have read and are finished with. Don't buy a new book, just bring in an old one. We will then put them in our special box and swap them, so you will get to take home a different book, to keep! If you don't have a book at home that you can bring in, come and talk to us about it- we have lots spare!

This week is an exciting one at St. Anthony's, but you may be wondering why. Well, this week is Book Week, and to celebrate we've got loads of fun events on. As always, World Book Day will be taking place; we can't wait to see your costumes! In addition, we've got competitions with cool prizes up for grabs, and reading events that you won't want to miss! All of this is to inspire you to get reading, and we want to make it our best year yet- so pick up that book!

Don't forget the BOOK SWAP! Bring in a book that you don't want any more, then on Thursday you'll be able to take a new book home!

Book Week... Next Week!

We are all very excited about Book Week- we hope that you are too! Thank you for all of the Mystery Reader photos we have received. You can see them in the hall; can you guess who they all are?! If you would like to enter, but haven't yet done so, please bring in your photograph on Monday!

We hope that we will see lots of you at 8:30am every day next week in the hall for 'Dads' Reading'. Bring a book and a male relative (although ladies are very welcome too!); find a comfy place to sit and settle in to start your day with a book!

On Thursday, the whole school will be dressed up as our favourite book characters! We'll have a special assembly to celebrate all of the wonderful costumes and to read this year's school story. We will also announce the winners of the 'Mystery Reader' competition!

During the week, you will also have the chance to enjoy some Buddy Reading. Year 5 will be joining the Nursery, to pair up and read together! You will have the chance to read a story to a child from the Nursery and they might want to share some books with you too!

It's nearly Book Week at St. Anthony's! We will be celebrating with another fun photo competition. Last year's Extreme Reading was incredibly exciting and we had some wonderful entries!

This year's challenge is called 'Mystery Readers'.

What you need to do:
1. Pick your favourite book.
2. Create a disguise and pick an interesting location for your photo. Remember you must be safe- ask an adult to help you and don't take any risks.
3. Cover your face with your favourite book. You might also try wearing a mask!
4. Ask an adult to take a photograph of you, with your face covered safely.
5. Print the photo.
6. Write your name on the back.
7. Hand it in to Mrs Parrott ASAP!
