This week, St. Clare's Class has become an inventors' workshop! We found out about the inventing process, then mind-mapped some problems that we could solve before designing our own inventions. Everyone created a detailed diagram of their invention and annotated it with  information and materials. Next, we each wrote a 'patent application' for our designs.

Snack Attack!

As part of our Fairtrade project, Year 5 are doing our bit to change the world! This week, we all wrote letters to David Cameron to try to persuade him to pass a law commanding all supermarkets to sell use Fairtrade ingredients for their own brand products and for other products, wherever possible. Year 5 are also planning and preparing for our Fairtrade Snack Sale. It will be held next Friday at 3:30pm in the Small Hall- please come along and help us support Oxfam's Fairtrade work!

This half term, we are also competing against each other in the Snack Attack challenge! Everyone in Year 5 is working with a team to create a new and original Fairtrade snack. As a school, we will be submitting ONE entry to the national competition- so each team are competing to win the first heat at school. The snack must include Fairtrade ingredients and must appeal to customers. We need to think of an original name for the product; design the packaging; create a logo and produce video, radio and print advertisements.

Pyramids and Lego Stop Motion Animation!

This week we have been learning about the pyramids, particularly those in Giza. We used this excellent website to look around Giza and learn about some of its features.

We also watched some short BBC clips about the building of the pyramids. We learned how archeologists have been able to discover how the pyramids were built.

Can you remember why the Ancient Egyptians buried their dead on the West of the Nile?

Yesterday, we combined the animation skills we have been learning in Computing with our knowledge about Ancient Egypt to make these wonderful videos. We used an app called 'Stop Motion Studio' to produce these stop motion animations. Instead of stone, we used Lego to build our pyramids!

More Animation!

On Thursday, we continued learning about animation. This week we used a program called 'Voki' to create some speaking characters. We had to work in groups to decide how the character should look, what they might wear, where they should be and how they would speak. Then, we used 'text-to-speech' to make our characters talk. It was quite tricky, as some words had to be spelled one sound at a time (phonetically) so that the computer could pronounce them properly.

Puppet Pals Animation

On Thursday we started learning about animation. This half term we will be making some animations of our own, using different techniques. We will be creating some films about Ancient Egypt... watch this space!

This week we used an app called 'Puppet Pals' to experiment with animation- we recorded the movements of the characters, selected and changed backgrounds and added voices to tell the story.

Powerpoint Stories

Today we finished our class story! In ICT today we used Powerpoint to retell the story of 'The Girl Who Spun Gold'. We focussed particularly on using moving animations in Powerpoint. The presentations are below- although the animations might not work on the blog.

After ICT, we planned and wrote our own endings to the story. Some of them will feature here over the weekend, so keep your eyes peeled!

Using Voki for Animation 1

Yesterday we had a really fun ICT lesson, using a website called 'Voki' to create animations. Each group produced animations of three characters from our class story, 'The Girl Who Spun Gold': Lit'mahn, Quashiba and Big King.

I am so impressed with these animations- you clearly thought very carefully about the appearance, clothing, background and voice of each character, as well as planning what you wanted them to say.
