An Invitation and a Sneak Preview!

On Friday 9th December, you are invited to the world premiere of four wonderful silent movies, filmed in 1919 by the St. Clare's Film Company and inspired by World War One.

Here, we can see a few sneak preview shots of the filming in process. We do hope you will be able to join us at 9am for this special event!

Today, as part of our Black History Month celebrations, we visited Dulwich Picture House Cinema to watch a wonderful film.

Big City Stories

Today we had a fantastic trip to the East Dulwich Picturehouse Cinema. We were fortunate to see a special series of short film clips called 'Big City Stories' all about the history of London's black community. Our workshop was led by June, who collected the archive films and taught us all about the lives of various Londoners throughout the 20th century. We had discussions about many of the issues and ideas raised in the film clips.

Today we had a fantastic trip to the new Picturehouse cinema on Lordship Lane, in a building that used to house our school! We watched a lovely film called 'Home'- we all enjoyed ourselves!

On Wednesday, we will be watching the Year 6 play in the morning. In the afternoon we will be having our Summer Class Party. If you have kindly agreed to bring in something for our party, please bring it into school on Wednesday morning. Leavers' Evening will be celebrated on Wednesday at 7pm.

On Thursday, we will have our End of Year Mass at school at 2:15pm. Thursday will also be Toy Day in St. George's. You can bring in a toy from home, but it must not be valuable, electronic or require batteries. Do not bring in anything that you are not happy to share! Cards, board games and soft toys are ideal!

On Friday, we will celebrate the ACE Awards assembly at 9am. School will close for the summer holidays at 2pm.

This year, we will not be sending exercise books and folders home until Christmas. However, please still bring in a carrier bag, as there will be some artwork to come home.

Pyramids and Lego Stop Motion Animation!

This week we have been learning about the pyramids, particularly those in Giza. We used this excellent website to look around Giza and learn about some of its features.

We also watched some short BBC clips about the building of the pyramids. We learned how archeologists have been able to discover how the pyramids were built.

Can you remember why the Ancient Egyptians buried their dead on the West of the Nile?

Yesterday, we combined the animation skills we have been learning in Computing with our knowledge about Ancient Egypt to make these wonderful videos. We used an app called 'Stop Motion Studio' to produce these stop motion animations. Instead of stone, we used Lego to build our pyramids!

Some Great Green Screen Examples!

This half term, we have been working on a green screen project in St. George's Class. We have made lots of films and we are proud of them all. We used an app called Do Ink on our iPad to combine our actors with some unusual backgrounds. We covered a whole corner of our classroom (walls and floor) with green backing paper and used it as our green screen. The Do Ink app allowed us to film in front of the green screen, then remove the green background and replace it with another image or film, just like they do in Hollywood!

When we started our topic, we needed to know why the birds were so angry with the pigs. We watched a short animation to find out their history. We liked the video, but it didn't have any words!

To solve the problem, we worked in groups to draft, rehearse and perfect a playscript for the animation.

At the end of the week, we recorded our playscripts over the animation. Here are the fantastic finished films:

Silent Movies

Today we started our big silent movie project! We began learning about silent movies today and found out about two of the most famous stars of silent movies; Charlie Chaplin (who lived in Kennington- not far from us) and Buster Keaton.

We discovered that many silent movies had the same features. They were all silent, apart from music (usually a piano), they were in black and white, used exaggerated gestures and expressions, had cue cards and often involved policemen, chase scenes and slapstick comedy.

We saw some very funny silent movie clips today! We also found out that the director would often talk to the actors while they were shooting the film, because they were not recording sound, so he could give them advice about exactly how he wanted them to look.

Next week we will be getting into teams and thinking about storylines for our own films!

My Holiday- by Caitlin

On my holidays I went to a theatre to watch a movie. It was called 'The Croods', it was so funny when the grandma said 'I am the winner' and a log hits her with fire on her hand. I laughed a lot til my lungs were laughing. The next day I went to London to see Big Ben, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace. I loved it inside but it was cold and we had to wait outside.

When it was the night we went to Pizza Hut and had a double cheese with pepperoni. Me and my family went home and fed our rabbit (Molly is her name). We almost forgot to try on our new party clothes for tomorrow was my friend's party and then we went to sleep.

Braveheart- a Review by Alfie, Calum and Jacob

At the weekend we watched a really good film called Braveheart about Scottish clans at war against the English to get their land back. The main character was William Wallace. We thought it was a very good film. We especially liked the penultimate battle. We think if they left out the execution part it would be better and we think the best bit was when they used the battering to open the gate.
