Our Class Poem- Death Drop

Icarus and Daedalus had just got to the roof of the palace and strapped on their wings. Icarus thought carefully about flying and falling.

After reading up to this point in the myth, we watched two video clips- one of Felix Baumgartner free falling from space and one of an eagle flying with a camera on its collar, so we could see his view point.

We then collected lots of similes and metaphors for FALLING and FLYING.

 

Each team chose their best similes and metaphors and wrote them onto strips of paper.

We used these fantastic metaphors and similes to create this class poem, by playing around with the order, punctuation and verses.

Death Drop

I circle the sky like a vulture,

As fast as a hawk,

The wind’s fingers pulling my hair,

I am as happy as a bird,

I put my arms out to enjoy the ride,

The wind howls blood-curlingly in my ear.

 

Falling like you’re FROZEN,

As cold as winter could be,

As scary as a roller coaster,

My stomach plummets to its very depths,

Feels like my heart came out of my mouth,

Falling like space debris,

Like a bird left its home.

 

Rock falling to Earth,

As terrified as a bee getting squashed,

I collapse like a roof caving in.

Icarus Puppets

On Friday, we found out that Daedalus and Icarus had escaped from King Minos' palace. King Minos was furious! We wrote very persuasive letters from the King to try to persuade Daedalus to come back.

In the afternoon, we made these fabulous puppets of Icarus:

Medusa Masks

Today we worked with Mrs Cook to read the story of Medusa, then make these terrifying masks! Don't look directly into our eyes... we might turn you into stone!

Our Roman Myths

 

Following our work about King Midas, we planned and wrote our own myths. We thought about why our character might be granted a wish, what might go wrong and how the problem might be solved. Here are some great examples of our myths:

The Midas Touch!

This week we received a very special message from King Midas! When we came into our classroom on Wednesday, an enemy of King Midas had hidden all of these gold objects around our room!

Once we had worked in teams to find all of King Midas' gold for him, we collected lots of adjectives to describe them, then wrote some poems about the King's favourite thing: GOLD!

We read a great version of 'King Midas and the Golden Touch' by Charlotte Craft. We enjoyed the story and loved the beautiful illustrations by K. Y. Craft.

Halfway through the story, we stopped and thought about what Midas might be thinking and feeling at this point in the story. We made a 'role on the wall' diagram for Midas- here is an example:

 

 

 

 

Then we drew pictures to show what we would do if we had the Midas touch!

 

 

We read the rest of the story, then made Fortunately-Unfortunately graphs, to show how Midas' luck changes throughout the story. When things are good for Midas, the line on the graph goes up and when things go wrong, the line goes down. Here is an example:

 

 

 

 

On Friday, we imagined that we had the Midas touch and worked in groups to make a 3D collage of items that Midas might touch. We also thought about mixing textures and using the paper folding and shaping skill that we learnt from Licy and Philippa.
