Friday's P4C session was fantastic! This week is Friendship Week at school, so every class in the school will be using the wonderful 'Something Else' as a stimulus for Philosophy.

We started early, on Friday afternoon, to give us more time to hold our enquiry.

The questions that were suggested by the groups were:

1. Is it rude to say 'No!'?
2. Why are some people envious of others?
3. Are we all the same in some way?
4. Why is everyone different?

After editing the questions and looking for assumptions, we held a vote to decide which question to discuss. The winning question was:

'Is it rude to say 'No!'?'

We had a great discussion. Most people seemed to agree that sometimes it can be rude to say no, but it depends how you say it. We talked about 'white lies' and when it might be ok to lie to protect someone's feelings. We also talked about when it might be important, or even essential, to say no.

This week, we had another super philosophy lesson. Tying in with our new WW1 topic, our stimulus this week was the wonderful picture book by Michael Foreman, 'War and Peas'.

We enjoyed the story, which gave us lots to think about, and we loved the fabulous illustrations!

Here are some of the questions the groups wrote:

1. Why do some people keep everything for themselves when there are others that need more?
2. Why are some people greedy?
3. Is money important?

And many more... it was a very interesting stimulus!

The question we voted to discuss was, 'Is money important?'

We had a great discussion and lots of topics were raised. St. Clare's are becoming very good at listening to each other before offering opinions- I especially like to hear sentences that begin with; "Building on what X said..." or "I agree/disagree with X because..." or "I think X is right, but maybe she could think about..."

A Wonderful Week!

We had a wonderful week; it was  Book Week and we had an unexpected visit from some unusual creatures!

In the next couple of weeks, we will be creating our own texts about endangered animals and working towards opening our Fairtrade Cafe at the end of term. Remember- we are in FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT!

An exciting addition to our topic has been the 'Snack Attack' challenge. Each team is working to design, promote and create a Fairtrade snack to compete with the other teams at school, to decide who will be our school's entry for the national competition. A busy few weeks ahead!

WORLD BOOK DAY- Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is WORLD BOOK DAY! Remember to come in costume (with a suggested donation of £1 for Book Aid International) and bring in your book for the Book Swap!

Every morning before school this week (from 8:30- 8:50am) we will be setting up the hall for you to come in and read with your dad (or brother, uncle, grandfather, or mum!) You can bring in your favourite book, or there will be some books and magazines available for you to read. There will be lots of comfy cushions and chairs for you to settle in and read together!

TOMORROW, you can come into school dressed as a character from a book. Everyone at school (including the adults!) will be in costume. It will be a fun day with a special assembly, so we can all see your fabulous costumes! We have suggested that you could donate £1 to a wonderful charity called 'Book Aid International'.

Remember to bring in a book from home that you have read and are finished with. Don't buy a new book, just bring in an old one. We will then put them in our special box and swap them, so you will get to take home a different book, to keep! If you don't have a book at home that you can bring in, come and talk to us about it- we have lots spare!

This week is an exciting one at St. Anthony's, but you may be wondering why. Well, this week is Book Week, and to celebrate we've got loads of fun events on. As always, World Book Day will be taking place; we can't wait to see your costumes! In addition, we've got competitions with cool prizes up for grabs, and reading events that you won't want to miss! All of this is to inspire you to get reading, and we want to make it our best year yet- so pick up that book!

Don't forget the BOOK SWAP! Bring in a book that you don't want any more, then on Thursday you'll be able to take a new book home!

Brilliant British Library Trip!

On Wednesday, we were fortunate to visit The British Library. We admired the beautiful building and felt very privileged to see some of their most precious books in the 'Treasures Collection'.

We had a great workshop with Sheila and Rebecca; firstly, we collected nouns, adverbs and adjectives from the Treasures Collection.

Next, we were inspired by an animation of 'The Jabberwocky' to create a calligraphy presentation of one of our words.

Finally, we worked with a small group to use the words we collected to create a piece of performance art. Some groups wrote poems, others made short plays or told a story.

Our work was combined to make a spectacular book!

Book Week... Next Week!

We are all very excited about Book Week- we hope that you are too! Thank you for all of the Mystery Reader photos we have received. You can see them in the hall; can you guess who they all are?! If you would like to enter, but haven't yet done so, please bring in your photograph on Monday!

We hope that we will see lots of you at 8:30am every day next week in the hall for 'Dads' Reading'. Bring a book and a male relative (although ladies are very welcome too!); find a comfy place to sit and settle in to start your day with a book!

On Thursday, the whole school will be dressed up as our favourite book characters! We'll have a special assembly to celebrate all of the wonderful costumes and to read this year's school story. We will also announce the winners of the 'Mystery Reader' competition!

During the week, you will also have the chance to enjoy some Buddy Reading. Year 5 will be joining the Nursery, to pair up and read together! You will have the chance to read a story to a child from the Nursery and they might want to share some books with you too!

It's nearly Book Week at St. Anthony's! We will be celebrating with another fun photo competition. Last year's Extreme Reading was incredibly exciting and we had some wonderful entries!

This year's challenge is called 'Mystery Readers'.

What you need to do:
1. Pick your favourite book.
2. Create a disguise and pick an interesting location for your photo. Remember you must be safe- ask an adult to help you and don't take any risks.
3. Cover your face with your favourite book. You might also try wearing a mask!
4. Ask an adult to take a photograph of you, with your face covered safely.
5. Print the photo.
6. Write your name on the back.
7. Hand it in to Mrs Parrott ASAP!

A Fabulous Philosophy Session!

This afternoon we had a fantastic Philosophy lesson. Today's stimulus was the beautifully illustrated 'How to Live Forever' by Colin Thompson. It was an intriguing story and every group generated some excellent enquiry questions inspired by the book.

We discussed the questions and decided whether they made any assumptions. Can you remember any that we spotted today?

The question we voted to discuss was, 'Why do some people want to live forever?'

It was a lively and constructive discussion, with lots of interesting ideas raised. We soon began discussing the pros and cons of living forever, then some children questioned whether, if you did live forever, it would be better to be frozen at 10 years old or get progressively older.
